Postively Mall Road

Posted by sepoy on 04 January 2005

Being far away from the homeland, memory accentuates both the positive and negative extremes of my experiences. I remember mangoes being more delicious than anything imaginable. I remember Lahore being hotter than hell. Both could be true but I doubt it.

Here in the diaspora, most conversations begin with the latter and not the former. Seldomly, one will have a group of kids reminiscing about the good times but mostly, they talk about how bad things are. I stopped participating in such conversations a long time ago. Mainly because I got tired of it. There is a place for critique and self-examination but there should not be a place for self-loathing.

I welcome the opportunity to fill the culture and self catgories on this page. So, look forward to the odd cultural bit and LOTS of memories of Lahore.

Yes, it's hot as hell in summer, it's overcrowded, it's dusty and busy but the spirit of Lahore lives; even though in the low income classes - sadly. I have been out of Lahore for many many years but I am glad to be back for good. It's home and there is no place like home.

I'm tired of hearing its BAAAD out here. The way I see it, consumerism [horror, horror!] thrives every where--including in Pakistan. Values and traditions are considered at risk in all societies. Crime is at an all time high in most megacities and so is pollution. Perhaps, the only attitude more visible among our circles is apathy towards life around us. And that's nobody's ;) fault!
