German Film Festival Opens in Karachi

The Goethe Institut will screen seven feature films on its newly opened premises over a month. The film festival will begin on Thursday. The movies will be screened on Thursdays and Mondays at 7pm.

According to a brochure issued by the German cultural centre, the first film to be screened is titled Halbe Treppe (Grill point). Directed by Andreas Dresen, the movie focuses on estrangement and betrayal between two couples in East Germany.

The second movie, Anansi, is about four Africans who plan to come to Europe to earn money for a better life. After a difficult journey, three of them arrive in Berlin, from where one of them is sent back to his country. The others face a tough future without work or accommodation. The film is directed by Fritz Baumann.

The third feature film, which is titled Bella Martha (Mostly Martha), is directed by Sandra Nettelbeck. The movie is about this excellent cook called Martha who takes a great deal of pride in her work. A cheerful Italian chef becomes her suspected rival and at the same time she has to bring up her dead sister’s stubborn daughter…
