Lahore students learn the art of natural dyeing

The Textile Department of the National College of Arts (NCA) is conducting a month-long workshop on the indigenous but endangered art of dyeing clothes with colours extracted from fruits and vegetables.

The college has invited two craftsmen from Sindh to conduct the workshop participated in by second and third-year students.

Sajida Vandal, the NCA principal, said the college was supporting indigenous arts, especially the endangered ones. She said the college had invited two craftsmen from a family of weavers in Sindh, which has been in the art of natural dying for centuries.

Ms Vandal said the college would help the two craftsmen get a place in Lahore to display their products.

Textile lecturers and workshop coordinators Atiya Javed and Ijaz Hussain said students were going through the experience of weaving in two crafts, Susi and Khais. They said Susi was a traditional Sindhi craft, which was endangered, while the art of making Khais (blankets) was also rare…
