Abbas equals world record as Pakistan dump India
Ace penalty corner shooter Sohail Abbas equaled the world record of most goals in international field hockey as his two-goal burst yesterday clinched Pakistan a 3-1 victory against India in the fifth Test of the eight-match series.
Abbas converted a penalty corner in the 28th minute and then sent a penalty stroke into the cage six minutes from close to boost his goal-tally to 267 goals, drawing level with Paul Litjens of Holland.
Like Abbas, Litjens too was a specialist penalty corner shooter.
The record-equaling goal for Abbas came after his rasping drag-flicked penalty corner shot struck Indian skipper Dilip Tirkey on the face, Tirkey had to be carried off the field on a stretcher and Abbas duly converted the resultant penalty stroke to seal Pakistan’s win…
