Pakistani Telecom Boom May Generate 8,000 New Jobs

New cellular and fixed-line telephone companies, which are likely to begin operations by December following the deregulation of the telecom sector, are expected to create over 8,000 direct and indirect job opportunities in the country.

Pakistan’s official unemployment rate stands at 8.27 percent, but economists estimate the real rate to be much higher.

Telecom authorities and stakeholders estimate that each company would initially require around 50 people to initiate operations, which would offer direct employment to over 3,000 people but a large number of people would be engaged thorough indirect employment…
