Free mobile phone SIMs draw Lahori crowds

Thousands of people gathered outside Ufone branches in the city on August 14, 15 and 16 seeking free connections. The response seemed to take the company by surprise.

According to a source in Ufone, the company set a target of 500,000 new connections in the five major cities over the four days. The rush of connections caused the company’s network to fail several times over the last few days. The company’s package comes on the back of incentives from Mobilink, said to be Pakistan’s biggest mobile phone operator. The company withdrew long distance charges on Mobilink to Mobilink calls in Pakistan and roaming charges on incoming calls…
